Job description

Java Developer Java Engineer Java Programmer

SKILLS: JAVA, SQL, OBJECT ORIENTED DESIGN, FLEX

Cars.com is a premier leader in the automotive online marketing space. We are looking for a Lead Application Developer with a breadth of knowledge and experience to join our internal tools team. This is a great opportunity to work on a large-scale web application; creating and optimizing the next generation of our internal tools using a combination of Java and Flex.

Core Qualifications:
• Must have 5 years + work as a software developer on the Java (J2EE) platform, and 1+ years experience with the Spring framework. Experience with Hibernate (or other ORMs) is a big plus.
• Must have 2 years + experience as lead architect of a large scale system.
• Experience developing Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) with Flex and ActionScript is a big plus.
• Must have strong database development skills (e.g. including database design and SQL queries and operations).
• Must have experience unit testing code with JUnit.
• Must fully understand object oriented design principles.
• Has participated in all aspects of the Software Development Lifecycle, from requirements gathering, technical documentation, testing, deployment and maintenance.
• Has a strong sense of teamwork and ability to communicate effectively.
The Ideal Candidate Description:
• You're a self-motivated, ferocious problem solver. Don't know a programming language that would be best for a situation? You learn it. Not sure what the best DB structure might be for a given application? You research options, make suggestions, and hash it out with the team.
• You are a team player. This sounds like a cliche but we're a small team. We try to avoid politics here. There's a team effort to move our projects forward quickly and get them done correctly. We work closely to get it all done: generate ideas, designs, and code -- and accept feedback in stride.
• You're a generalist. You're not a one trick pony who is an expert in only one thing. You're a programming polyglot, fluent in several programming languages and paradigms. You’re equally comfortable working on any layer of an application.
• You are proud of your database skills. You have a clear understanding of when and when not to use normalized tables. You’re fluent in SQL and have designed many databases. You can weigh the pros and cons of different approaches to designing data structures.
• You dream in OO. You're a skilled object oriented designer and have a strong command of common design patterns. You've architected non-trivial portions of systems, preferably an entire system, and are familiar with a framework or two of some sort.
